Stories from the Past
Last Meeting this season. Tamworth's Oakburn Park 23/06/07. A field of eight cars fronted up for a great afternoons racing. Chris Alcorn, Keith Levy and Brian Thorley joined Sprintcar driver Mark Blyton to take on the local quartet of Luca Cox, Hugh Austin, Wayne Galvin and Brian Cox. The Feature Race was won by the granite track specialist Brian Thorley followed by Mark Blyton and Chris Alcorn. Everybody enjoyed the days racing followed by a BBQ and a couple of beers. A great way to finish what has been a very hectic season.
N.S.W. Championships at Parramatta's Tyrepower Speedway.
Raceday. Having never been to Parramatta before we could only guess what gearing and jetting to use, wrong on both counts. After Heat 1 we had to change our gearing by two teeth on the rear and after Heat 2 we had to drop our power jets by 20.Heat 3 all seemed to be right on the money only to get involved in everybody elses dramas in turn 4. Kenny Norman took the right action only to end up in front of me, with no room to my left ,I hit Kenny in the rear putting both of us out. Back in the pits we replace a broken radius rod and sterring arm. Back out for the Final starting from rear of field the best we could manage was 12th.With the amount of carnage that happened throughout the night I should be happy to finish in one piece. Craig Cox (no relation but also from Tamworth) had a rollover in his first heat and is still in Westmead Hospital with a broken Vertabra, he maybe released this Thursday in a body brace, all our family and I'm sure all the F500 members wish Craig a speedy recovery.Max Dumsney won the Title in what could only be described as A Driving Lesson for the rest of the F500 troups.
This Saturday (5th) The who's who of Australian F500 will descend on Parramatta for this years Title. Sponsored by Fireservice Plus, this will probably be the biggest N.S.W. Title for many years. Current Aust 1 Ben McLeod, Aust 2 Tim Rankin and Aust 3 Steve Caunt will be there along with defending N.S.W. Champ Chris Alcorn. 31 drivers have nominated so it looks set for a great nights racing.
Australian Championships. Well our effort could have been better rewarded, but with two engine blow-ups and a dodgy clutch we still managed to have a great time in Marybourough with a best lap of only 14.1. Congratulations to the organisers and many thanks for their hospitality. Special congrats to the new Australia Champion Ben McLeod, Tim Rankin 2nd and Steve Caunt in 3rd. The final was a great advertisement for F500 racing, fast, furious and fantastic.
Luca's Bits
FROM THE START Nov 06
On Saturday night at Oakburn Park I finally got to do some laps in the Honda. In the first session I found that the kill switch did work after bumping it with my right hand. Back out on the track for session two, I was really enjoying my first night of driving when the engine leaned out and holed the piston. It was a very frustrating first hitout but as Dad said "Thats motor racing, get used to it". I can't wait until next months Christmas Cup at Oakburn Park to have another test session. Many thanks to all at the Tamworth Speedway Club and NSW F500 Club for your support.
TAMWORTH 16/12/06 With a new motor on board I finally got to do some laps between the senior races. First time out I had fuel problems, the needle wasn't opening up enough to allow fuel through. The second time out the car went great, finally I got to drive it without any problems at all, the third run was interupted by the carbie actually coming out of the maniford, while Dad fixed that,Santa arrived for the kids then I finally got on the track the car ran fantastic, I think I've got just what I want for Christmas.
Practice Day at Tamworth. Next Saturday (24th Feb) I will finally get to do some more practice laps at Oakburn Park, with only three more months to go before I turn 16, I need all the practice I can get before I start playing with the 500's Saturday Report. The day was a scorcher, but finally I go to do 3 lots of 8 laps at a reasonable speed, getting down into the 21 sec laps was a great achievement as the car was slightly over geared and bogging down in the turn exits. Never mind, I had a great day, with thanks to the Tamworth Speedway Club again for their great support.
Tamworth Speedway's meeting on May 12 will be my first outing as a senior driver,I will still be driving my Honda 250 for the rest of this season, next season I will run a 500 of some description( Dad keeps changing his mind on what motor I will have).
Tamworth 12 May- This meeting sure took a long time to get here but finally I got to race as a senior. The car ran just great on the night and with some help from Graham Baxter the car handled better than ever. Now I have to save up to get a 500 motor for next season and retire the 250 back to the bike.
Rotax fires it first shot! My new motor and gearbox have finally been fitted and everything seems to work as it should. Now I have to strip the car and have the chassis repainted, can't wait for the season to start.
My First Drive in a F500. 9/9/07 As part of the Junior Driver Training Day I was allowed a couple of test sessions in the F500. Dad wanted me to find out what these things go like before Grafton on the Longweekend, I'm sure glad I had a practice, these F500 are just so awesome.I think I will have to learn to respect how much power they have or I will be spending a lot of time repairing it.
19:57:17 2007-12-02 SouthCoast Championship. Nowra. What a great night of F500 racing, just the way it should be, no one had any damage, just a few minor mechanical failures. More on the news page. 16:35:26 2007-11-26 Practice Day Tamworth. Boy, we need the rain but it could have waited another couple of hours so we could get more than two runs. Never mind, first time rockie Andrew Cox (no relation) finally had a drive in his recently purchased car, while Craig Cox ( no relate either) got back in the drivers seat for the first time since breaking a vertabrae during the NSW Titles at Parramatta. 08:46:01 2007-11-20 Rd 3 Tri-Steel Series. 15:13:23 2007-09-19 Bill Hempstead Memorial Meeting.
With the blessing of Dawn Hempstead, the Tamworth F500 Drivers will be promoting a Memorial meeting for our late friend and fellow racer Bill. At this stage it will probably be run in conjunction with the 7th Round of the Tri-Steel Series (April 12 2008) . With the involvment of some great sponsors, combined with the Rd7 prizemoney, this could be an absolute cracker of a meeting. Dawn has asked that we have a Perpetual Trophy named in Bill's honour. Stay tuned for more info.
14:22:35 2007-08-23 Changes to Race Dates page, please check!
First Meeting at Tamworth's Oakburn Park. The first meeting set down for Tamworth has been rescheduled to the 8th of December. This fits in well with the F500's with the running of the Christmas Cup, with a minimum prize pool of $500 plus Tankard plus Club Trophies. Last years winner Kenny Norman will no doubt be out to retain his Title.
Things are looking good for the 07/08 Season. There are plenty of race dates to pick from, the Australian Titles are to be held here in N.S.W.,a new point score series for the state. QLD also have plenty of action already in the diary, Goulburn/ACT have enough meetings to sink a ship,so I might have to invite my Bank Manager to be in the Pit Crew. A full list is in the Race Dates page.
